✨AUTUMN HEALTH & WELLBEING PLAN✨
Autumn can be a transformative season for personal health and wellbeing, with the change in weather providing the perfect opportunity to adopt new habits and routines. Below is a plan that outlines how to maintain and improve physical and mental wellbeing through the autumn months, including what to do and when.
1. September – Prepare for Transition
Mental Health: Reflect and Set Intentions
What to do: Autumn marks the transition from the high energy of summer to the quieter, reflective months. Take some time to set intentions for the season. Consider journaling or setting personal goals, particularly around mental wellbeing and self-care routines.
When to do it: Early September, as routines shift with the end of summer holidays.
How to do it: Set aside 10-15 minutes daily for journaling, gratitude lists, or mindful meditation to help you refocus.
Physical Health: Strengthen Immune Health
What to do: With colder weather approaching, boosting your immune system is key. Start introducing more nutrient-rich, seasonal foods such as squashes, apples, and leafy greens.
When to do it: Throughout September.
How to do it: Incorporate warming dishes like soups and stews that feature seasonal produce. Supplement with Vitamin C, zinc, and consider adding probiotics or fermented foods to support gut health.
Exercise: Adjust for Cooler Weather
What to do: With temperatures cooling, now is a great time to embrace outdoor activities such as hiking or cycling before the weather becomes too harsh.
When to do it: Weekends or early mornings in September when the weather is still mild.
How to do it: Plan weekend hikes, take long walks in parks, and embrace any opportunity to exercise outside. Prepare by layering up with breathable, moisture-wicking clothing.
2. October – Maintain a Routine
Mental Health: Combat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
What to do: October can see a decline in daylight, which might trigger Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Focus on mental health by increasing exposure to natural light and using tools like SAD lamps.
When to do it: Throughout October, especially as the evenings grow darker.
How to do it: Schedule time for outdoor walks in the middle of the day. Invest in a light therapy lamp and use it in the mornings to boost your mood.
Physical Health: Stay Hydrated and Warm
What to do: As temperatures drop, it’s easy to forget hydration. Staying well-hydrated is essential for maintaining skin health, energy levels, and cognitive function.
When to do it: Throughout the month.
How to do it: Drink herbal teas, infused water, or warm broths to stay hydrated. Avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol, as these can dehydrate and affect sleep quality.
Exercise: Adjust Your Routine Indoors
What to do: As the weather turns colder, you may need to transition to more indoor-based workouts.
When to do it: From mid-October onwards.
How to do it: Join a local gym, or start an at-home exercise routine using bodyweight exercises, yoga, or resistance bands. Try online fitness classes to stay motivated.
3. November – Build Resilience for Winter
Mental Health: Prioritise Rest and Recovery
What to do: November can be a busy and often stressful month as the lead-up to the festive season begins. Focus on getting enough sleep and managing stress levels.
When to do it: Throughout November.
How to do it: Establish a regular sleep routine. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Practice relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, or evening meditation.
Physical Health: Boost Circulation and Warmth
What to do: As it gets colder, staying warm and promoting circulation becomes crucial. This will help prevent seasonal colds and keep energy levels up.
When to do it: Mid-to-late November, when temperatures begin to drop significantly.
How to do it: Start using warming spices like ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon in your meals to help boost circulation. Wear warm layers and consider investing in a hot water bottle or heated blanket for cosy evenings.
Exercise: Focus on Flexibility and Mobility
What to do: With increased time spent indoors, it’s important to maintain flexibility and mobility to prevent stiffness, especially if working from home or spending long hours sitting.
When to do it: Incorporate stretching into your daily routine, ideally after waking or before bed.
How to do it: Dedicate 10-15 minutes to a stretching routine, focusing on key areas like the neck, shoulders, back, and legs. Yoga or Pilates can be great options to incorporate flexibility exercises.
Ongoing Autumn Wellbeing Tips:
Nutrition:
Focus on seasonal eating. Root vegetables, mushrooms, and squashes are rich in fibre and nutrients.
Eat a balanced diet rich in antioxidants to help fight off illnesses. Include leafy greens, berries, and nuts.
Hydration:
Drinking warm water with lemon or herbal teas can keep hydration levels up, while also promoting digestion and soothing the throat.
Sleep Hygiene:
As the evenings grow darker, aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep. Use blackout curtains and keep electronics out of the bedroom for better rest.
Self-Care:
Create a cosy environment at home. Hygge (the Danish concept of cosiness) can enhance wellbeing. Use candles, blankets, and take time for personal relaxation, whether through reading, a warm bath, or practising mindfulness.
Conclusion:
The autumn months offer a unique opportunity to prepare for the colder, darker months ahead while embracing a slower, more reflective pace. By focusing on both physical and mental health, and adjusting routines to fit the changing season, it’s possible to maintain a balanced, healthy lifestyle. Start early in September with preparation, maintain good habits through October, and build resilience for winter in November, ensuring you’re ready to face the winter months feeling strong and well.
